New Milestone: 900+ RSS Subscribers!
November 22, 2007 Posted by Tyler CruzMy RSS count was toying with me the past week-and-a-half, making small new records increasing by 1 or 2, then jumping to 896 (right below my target goal of 900), back down again, then to 892, 891… and then last night I finally broke the 900 milestone with 909 RSS subscribers!
Yay! It may sound silly, but watching my RSS count grow is perhaps the most rewarding part of blogging for me right now. I love the challenge of setting new goals, attaining them, and then setting higher goals.
It’s hard to believe that exactly one year ago I had just under 200 RSS subscribers. It makes me wonder what I will be at one year from now.
The last time I mentioned my RSS count, I had hit 846 readers and announced:
“My new goal is to hit 900 RSS subscribers, and average 850 RSS subscribers so that I can confidently state that my blog has 850 subscribed readers.”
Well, now I’ve hit both goals: I broke 900 RSS subscribers, and I think it’s safe to say that I average 850 readers. Therefore, I must set a new goal. And this will be for the biggest, in my eyes, milestone there is for RSS: 1000!
That’s right – my new goal is to hit 1,000 RSS subscribers and average 900. My prediction is that this will happen sometime in mid-January, but we’ll see.
On a side note, I’m surprised that nobody has signed up to my RSS e-mail option…

I do have one small bone to pick with you, though. I’m a huge fan of setting goals, but for goals to work they have to have some form of measure to them. Saying “I want to hit 1,000 subscribers” is an incredibly open ended goal. You could hit that tomorrow, or you could hit it in 12 months time. Without setting a measure with the goal, such as a date, the goal almost becomes worthless. I realise you said you think it will happen in mid-Jan. That’s all well and good, but that isn’t saying what you’re aiming for. That’s just saying what you think will happen.
Just a friendly tip from a friendly reader, that’s all. If I were you, I would be sure to add a measurement to your RSS goals. If you want to have 1,000 subscribers by mid-January, then great. Set that goal, and work your blogging butt until mid-January to reach that goal. 😀 Without the measure, there’s no motivation to push to reach the goal. 🙂
I hope that helps in some way. However you decide to manage your goals, I wish you the best of luck. I set myself a goal to reach 50 RSS subscribers by the end of November. Today, I woke up to see FeedBurner display 53 subscribers. I know how much fun it is to meet goals and see RSS numbers build. 🙂

I totally understand what you’re saying.. I think it’s just a matter of semantics here though.
When I say goal, I usually just mean a passive goal, where I am not actively trying to reach that goal, at least not by any aggressive means. For that, I usually call those challenges, hence my 46-Hour Work Week Challenge, etc.
As you say, I’m just sitting back and hoping that I reach these new ‘goals’, but am not really doing anything to try to reach them other than work and improve on my blog normally.
I don’t think it’s semantics, except in the fact that you’ve given a name (“passive goals”) to what he’s referring to. Goals are pointless to mention without a target date, or some possibility of failing. Otherwise, they’re just stating the obvious. You might as well set a “goal” of making a million dollars.
Congrats on breaking 900 subscribers, looks like this blogs growing at a great pace once again!
congrats. I think you will reach 1000 before january, probably within the next few weeks.
The number of subscribers tends to grow at a faster rate the more subscribers you have. Obviously this makes sense, more readers means more people know about your site and can tell others and more content means more traffic from search engines too.
