Blogging is Like Guitar Hero…

Guitar Hero is a super fun game.  If you haven’t played Guitar Hero, you’re missing out.

Aside from letting you daydream about being a rock ‘n roll superstar guitar player, the game has many songs that get you pumped up and excited about music.  Similar to blogging, Guitar Hero is something that is very addictive, fun to do, keeps you up at night, works on your creativity, brings out your competitiveness, and is something anyone can do.

This article highlights a few of the bigger similarities between Guitar Hero and blogging.

Anyone can blog, but only experts make money

Since the advent of blog software like WordPress, Blogger, Presstopia and the like, blogging has become so accessible that it takes only minutes to set up your own blog.  As a complete newbie, you can have a blog that is available for the world to see set up in no time!

With such powerful technology at our fingertips, it is no wonder that there is a lot of fluff and just plain bad blogs polluting the Internet.  It seems that people put up blogs just for the heck of having one, even though they are painful to look at and are even worse to read.  Much like Guitar Hero where anyone can conquer the beginner levels, it takes luck, practice, and skill to succeed as an expert.  That’s one of the great things about Guitar Hero…anyone can play and have a good time but to really make a name for yourself you need to practice and learn the songs.

If you want to truly become an expert blogger capable of amazing your readers, it is very important for you to know your audience, know your product, and be a captivating writer.  You don’t want to flub often or else you’ll be booed off the stage and lose your audience very quickly.

Blogging is Fun

Like Guitar Hero, once I start blogging I really find it difficult to pull away from it.  I always want to bring my blogging skills up a notch or two and want to hit the right notes with my audience.  Tracking visitors, looking at statistics, reading other blogs and making friends online is a completely fun way to learn about what you love.  Blogging is fun and should never be a forced, arduous task.

One of the more interesting things that I have noticed since I got into blogging is the pattern of those who really love to talk about what they love, those that like to talk about what they learn from others and those who have jumped on the bandwagon and are blogging half heartedly.  The half-hearted posts and bland topics really are noticeable to the readers and I normally stick to those blogs for no more than 30 seconds.  I’ll scan a few posts and immediately know that the blog won’t be around for too much longer.

On the other hand, sometimes I’ll find a blog that is so interesting, well written, compelling and well written that it’s obvious that the blogger really likes to talk about a certain topic and the writer’s passion is show on each post.  I quickly add those blogs to my RSS reader and to my favorites to check them out regularly.

Blogging is Competitive

Guitar Hero is a great game in more ways than one.  You can have fun as a bystander listening to the great tunes in the game, you can have fun playing the guitar and being a rockstar by yourself, or better yet, you can play against others and really put your skills to the test.
Blogging is very similar to Guitar Hero in these respects; as a reader and visitor of blogs, I have fun by learning what others have to say on the topics that interest me.

Often times I’ll come away impressed with some new nugget of knowledge that I have acquired or ideas that I have obtained by seeing what others have to offer.  Other times I’ll feel like a blogging rockstar when I finish a really good post on a subject or when I make things happen on my website that I really thought were unique.

However, what really makes me want to succeed at blogging is when I see other blogs innovating on certain themes.  Take John Chow and his ridiculously awesome blogging income or Jeremy Shoemaker’s AdSense wizardry, these bloggers and their success have inspired me to have a blog that keeps readers wanting coming back to learn from me.

Competition is a driving force behind many blogs and mine is no different; I want to do better than the next blog, I want you to like my blog better than the previous blog, and I want my blog to stand out from all other blogs.  Is that a bad thing?  Not at all…after all, innovation and competition have been responsible for some of the better inventions of our time! Blogging, although fun and easy to do, is a competitive business that requires practice and skill in order to do it successfully.  You can take it easy and put your comments in once in a while, but to really stand out from the crowd you need to be different and know how to hit the right notes with your readers and other bloggers.  Do you have what it takes to be an expert blogger?
